Lessons

  1. Argumentation: Media literacy balloon

This is a critical thinking game where students pretend they represent a specific media outlet or content provider and prove to others that they are worthy of staying in a crashing hot air balloon.

  2. Clickbait bingo

This activity is a fun way for your students to practice what they learned in the “Clickbait” lesson. They must find examples of common strategies used in clickbait texts.

  3. Fake News In History 3: Simulation Game

Fake news isn’t a new phenomenon, but it has changed a lot over time. These lessons will take a dive into the history of news and fake news up until the rise of the internet.

In this final lesson, students will play a simulation drawing inspiration from the theory and examples discussed in the previous two lessons. Groups will be assigned a role in an imaginary society and a secret objective they will try to accomplish by writing a statement.

  4. Our Media Environment 3 — Fake News Bluff

In this game, students work in groups to prepare two news items about the same developing story. While one is an objective rundown of the events, the other contains fake and misleading information.

  5. Stakeholders 3 — Mock debate

In this lesson plan, students assume the roles of various stakeholders and provide input on contentious events or polarising news stories.

The exercise enables them to become more comfortable identifying the arguments underpinning specific stances towards contested social issues and public speaking without having to master the key elements of formal debating.
