Lessons

  1. Stakeholders 3 — Mock debate

In this lesson plan, students assume the roles of various stakeholders and provide input on contentious events or polarising news stories.

The exercise enables them to become more comfortable identifying the arguments underpinning specific stances towards contested social issues and public speaking without having to master the key elements of formal debating.

  2. Syntax, composition, and tone: how you come across to an audience

Students are given a sample piece of writing on some topic. They are split into groups (or work individually) and tasked with changing the text to convey the same facts but significantly changing the text's tone.

  3. The language of balanced reporting

This lesson helps students develop critical reading skills and learn how to differentiate between opinion and news.
